The Ultimate Pedigree SiteScanning Tips and Tricks |

We get many questions along the lines of: Why do some photos on the site look so much better than others? Here are some tips to help you:Tip #1: Choose a Good PhotoThe best photos are with the dog standing in full or 3/4 profile. The photo should exibit good color and strong contrast. Contrast is important - particularly contrast with the background - if the dog blends into the background all anyone will see is a blob. This is especially important with blues and blacks. Blues and Blacks almost always look best in photos taken in strong sunlight with light colored backgrounds. Tip #2: Use a Good ScannerMany scanners, particularly cheap ones, will ruin just about any photo. For as little as $150 you can buy the top rated scanner the Epson 1240U. Read a Review, Latest Prices. Tip #3: Ignore "scan for the web options"When you "scan for the web" you are putting too much trust in the scanner and not leaving yourself enough options for enlarging, color color correcting, and so forth. Tip #4: Scan at least 150 DPIThe final result will be 72 DPI at 250 pixels. If you start scanning at 72 DPI you leave little room for improving the scan in Adobe Photoshop. Plus, the smaller the image of the dog, the higher the needed scan resolution. If after scanning the photo, the image has to be enlarged, you need to rescan at a higher resolution. If 150 is not enough then choose 200, 300, or 600. It's easy remove unneeded pixels, but impossible to add them back in if you need them! Tip #5: Use JPEG to save your pictures, and don't use low quality settings.I occasionally get photos in GIF format. GIF was designed for graphic arts with just a few colors. GIF is not designed for photography. Always save your scans in JPEG format in Medium or High Quality mode. Let me worry about disk space! Follow these tips and you will have great looking pictures of your dogs on our site! |
